Toolbox is just a bunch of dots!
#1
Hello GIMP enthusiasts!

I am currently teaching a course where I had to learn GIMP to help my students color their artwork. (I have been using Photoshop for many years but in this new school, they use GIMP)

I have to say I have found GIMP is a great program, except for a glitch or I am not sure what that is anymore. You see in some computers where the program has been installed, the toolbox shows correctly and in some others the tool book is just a bunch of dots that are fixed on the top left part of the window.
Huh
If you click on the dots you can see which one belongs to which tool, which I find very impractical. I have seen the same tutorials over and over and I have tried the Ctrl + B command to bring back the toolbox, the Edit-Preferences-Window management-restore to default
and nothing works. I close and re-open the program and the damn dots are still there.

Lastly I tried re-installing the program and that did not work either. I am more or less desperate about this frustrating problem.
Anyone that can help me out here? Has anyone encountered the same problem?

Are these problem computers 32 bit versions of Windows?

There have been problems with the 32 bit version that gets installed using the gimp.org installer. If you are not using the latest installer gimp-2.10.4-setup-2.exe give it a try.

Give details of Windows version and maybe some advice available.

I have reproduced this issue recently but there are alternatives for 32 bit Gimp 2.10.4 which I can try.

A couple of new tests in a Windows 7 32 bit (VM)

1. The latest Gimp installer worked ok here. Replaced an existing Gimp 2.8 All the icons are there.

2. I was hoping for a better result from the latest samj portable Gimp 2.10.4. It comes as a 'big' archive but only the 32 bit section is needed. Nearly 600 MB of files which might be too much for an older computer with limited resources. Starts with a launcher, there should be a language suitable for most locations. Icons are still missing but the legacy set works. Check in Edit -> Preferences -> Icon Themes One or two dialogue icons missing. This might be ok as a last resort.

It's a known issue: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/1563

You could try the work-around of a version of the Legacy Icon Theme, as in this thread: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-User-I...-on-W7-Pro
