color to alpha is greyed out?

Hi All,

I am trying to remove a background and when I go to colors and try to add color to alpha it is greyed out?  How can I fix this.  I would greatly appreciate any help you can send my way.

Probable cause - no alpha channel

Go to Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha channel

then try Color -> Color to Alpha again

Another possibility:
Image must be RGB (not grayscale or indexed)
Image > Mode > RGB
