  Slice into layers?
Posted by: paulfh - 11-16-2023, 11:37 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

I'm familiar with how to slice an image into separate images via Slice Using Guides, but what I would like to be able to do is slice into Layers within the source image.

I know I can do it by manual selection but when creating a lot of slices it can become too time consuming and it can be tricky to get the slice sizes right. Does anyone know if there is a plugin or script available that can automate this process? What I would ideally like is an automatic way to:

Select number of equally sized slices
Select whether they are done horizontally or vertically
Have them cut and pasted into new Layers

GIMP 2.10.34 - Windows 10

Thanks
Paul

  HTML coding
Posted by: denzjos - 11-12-2023, 04:36 PM - Forum: Watercooler - Replies (3)

Because my old website maker (copy and paste, WYSIWYG) generate HTMLcode that now show errors on the screen after uploading to a server (errors: some images and some characters not shown), I had to change to another webside maker. I wanted freeware and after installing and trying some freeware I found Bluegriffon. I think that's a good one. Now it's quite pleasant to code again (still learning). And I can now correct my old websites.

I also use TED Notepad (freeware) to make corrections to the code because it's sometimes easier and I am now learning something new : HTML coding. Somtimes frustrating, but if I get some result it feels good. Smile

Reduce image to simple color palette?
Posted by: Fleas - 11-11-2023, 03:58 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to "flatten" an image's colors to give it less depth and feel more like an 8-bit sprite.  Here is an example of what I'm working with:

[Image: $Enemy-Knight.png]  original    [Image: $Enemy-Knight1.png] edited

I have a few hundred of these types of images so I'd like to know if there is a way to easily reduce all the different shades of green to only one green.  Same with brown, etc.  Using tools like posterize, threshold, and so on tend to pick up the wrong parts of the image and I would be doing tons of edits either way.

Brick start_gimp-2.10.bat - Installation
Posted by: Krikor - 11-10-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Installation and usage - Replies (8)

Hi,

I downloaded the Samj Portable 2.10.32 version and am carefully analyzing how I will proceed to change the version.

The first thing that is different that I found is the existence of the start_gimp-2.10.bat file, which does not exist in my version in use.

So my question is:

Why this .bat file if there is nothing like that in the current version?
When will it be executed?
Should I keep it or can I delete it?

Here the contents of the file:

set GMIC_PATH=%CD%\GMIC_Filters
set GIMP2_DIRECTORY=%CD%\Preferences
start /B %CD%\bin\gimp-2.10.exe

Last but not least!

Is there a way for me to test this new version (2.10.32) without having to first uninstall the current version (2.10.28) and so that there is no conflict between them (shared use of files, etc.)?

Grateful!

  Changes in 2024 for Ubuntu
Posted by: Tas_mania - 11-09-2023, 10:19 PM - Forum: Alternate Gimp packagings - Replies (14)

The Register has reported changes in the 2024 Ubuntu LTS system.

There will be a 'Core Desktop' and an 'Ubuntu Core' edition with a totally locked admin file system. I'm confused already, I hope they come-up with different names?

Quote:it's entirely built with a single packaging system: Ubuntu's Snap.

My experience is Snap is slower to load on older systems. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu but does not use Snap. Which direction will they go?

Takes Forever to EXPORT an image
Posted by: OldSargeDaleD - 11-09-2023, 07:13 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

Dell XPS 8940
11th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-11900
32.0 GB
Windows 11 Pro

I open a graphic image (anything from a JPG to a PNG to a TIFF)
I work on the file -- many times, simply cropping something out of the larger image
I Click File, I click Export

I just did this, creating a headshot for an Avatar on my genealogy software.
It took me 7 (count 'em SEVEN) attempts to get the file name into the input box and get it exported.
Gimp stalled out, it took me out of the Export dialog box and back to the main screen with my cropped image
I'd try again, and again, etc -- the program would go into "Not Responding" then it would time out (again) and I'd have to start over

Any suggestion??
Thanks
Dale
