trying to edit text in an image.   When I use the toolbox Clone tool, it creates this brush effect that I can't get rid of.   New to Gimp to just trying to get acquainted.

You set the brush in the tool options, or by clicking on the brush thumbnail in the toolbox. If you are using a tablet, this selection has to be done with the tablet (there is a set of options per "pointer", so each pointer is used to change its own options).
