After Mint update I can no longer name files to save
#1
Rich,

I thought I would direct this post specifically to you since you have provided me with Gimp 2.10.38 and Gimp 3.0.6 AppImages and I thought you may find this interesting.

After updating from Mint 22.2 to Mint 22.3 Cinnamon, neither of my Gimp's will allow files to be renamed or named when trying to save as or export as.

As an example, in the image above, I'm unable to backspace at all.  It's like the keyboard is dead.  All other programs that I want to rename something in works though, so Gimp seems to be singularly affected.

It has to be related to the update of Mint because that is precisely the moment this issue arose but, I thought I would just check here with you to definitely rule out it being a Gimp problem before I head over to the Mint forum.

Attempt to correct so far is that I have deleted the entire .config folder in /home for each AppImage and let it rebuild.

Result:  No change.

Created a thread at Linux Mint forums on topic and a poster stated that they were using the same version of Gimp AppImage, had updated Mint from 22.2 to 22.3 also, and didn't have the issue I've commented on.

(UPDATE) D/Loaded the official GIMP 3.0.6 AppImage x86_64 at the Gimp.org site and the problem RESOLVED itself.  Of course, now none of the damn plugins that I use like Resynthesizer and Beautify work.

The plugins with your modified 3.0.6 AppImage  work, Rich, but the same plugins don't work with the official 3.0.6 AppImage release.  The same old situation.

It would be aggravating, but possible, to get by with the official 3.0.6 AppImage with virtually no plugins that work but, it's going to hurt to lose the old 2.10.38 AppImage with the plethora of plugins that I use with it.

You forgot about the guarantee, there is none Wink

I do not have a Mint 22.3 for a try-out.  For backward compatibility the appimage comes from an old ubuntu 22.04.  There is a Gimp 3.0.8 coming soon and that will probably kill off my appimage anyway.

Backward compatibility is also the problem with the gimp.org 3.x appimages, Generated with a Debian "bookworm" base so to compile gmic or resynth plugins you need a working Debian 12 / Gimp 3 for that mix.  That has defeated me. No use using Debian 13, I tried.

Some alternatives:
Get the flatpak Gimp 3, that seems to have dedicated gmic and resynth packages.

For older python plugins the ivan-hc appimage might work (I have not tried it) https://github.com/ivan-hc/GIMP-appimage...ous-hybrid but not compiled plugins.

I might be worth installing a regular Gimp 3 from a PPA https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/+...ntu/gimp-3 I use one of those for compiling gmic and resynth.

If & when I upgrade to kubuntu 26.04 that will come with Gimp 3 anyway, probably the same with the next Mint.

I didn't forget about the guarantee, Rich.  It's disappointing though, eveything still works with both the 2.10.38 and the 3.0.6 AppImages except the ability to rename files, which is a huge detriment.

I don't think I wish to get into Flatpaks and I've done PPA's and didn't like the clutter and dependencies and issues that all of that brought in.  I also don't wish to downgrade Mint back to 22.2 so, my options are becoming fewer.

The damn 3.0.6 AppImage provided by Gimp.org is useless since I don't use Debian. As much as I hate to do it, I suppose I'll just downgrade Gimp down to 2.10.36, which does happen to still be in the Mint 22.3 Software Manager, a  regular install, and do away with all the AppImages and wait until the next version of Mint is released and hope it has a functioning Gimp 3 release that can be used that isn't just a Flatpak version.

Thanks for all your help with this over these fews years. I appreciate the time you spent fixing up the AppImages for usage.  All good things must eventually come to an end, I suppose.

I think I have a fix for you, but Friday is a busy day for me, just off to see friends for a beer.  Have a look back tomorrow and I will post something.

Edit: Back again.

I do not 100% think it is an appimage renaming export problem, however since you are using Mint 22.3 try this cut down appimage.
