In future using the mouse wheel the current picture should be zoomed in or out.

If you hold down the Ctrl key whilst using the mouse wheel that will have the same effect.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass, when other software like Krita or Blender, you just scroll to zoom in/out, GIMP you need to use your 2 hands

Ctrl-wheel to zoom is pretty much the standard: Firefox, Chrome, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, my two image viewers, my text editor, my file explorer, my terminal/console...

Yeah... I stand corrected, I just spend the whole afternoon in GIMP, and 99% I wanted to scroll down or up.

This may be the case in office/productivity software.  But in graphics software, zoom with scroll-wheel (no modifiers) is industry standard.

Nuke, Fusion, Krita, 3D Studio Max, Resolve, Combustion, Flame, Shake, Photoshop, Painter, Premiere, After Effects, Lightroom, Darktable, ZBrush, C4D, Modo, SketchUp, ComfyUI, Mari, Unity, Godot, Unreal, GameMaker, Xviewer... practically every app I've ever used zooms with scroll wheel.  No keyboard modifier needed.

GIMP is more a graphics app than an office/productivity app, so it would be both logical and intuitive to follow industry standard conventions and simply zoom with scroll wheel.

I guess the line between office/productivity and graphics is getting more blurred? Actually, the word 'productivity' is also getting very vague  For me anyway.

Just in case someone doesn't know. A very easy way to zoom in and out is with the + sign on the keyboard to zoom in and the - sign to zoom out. Then while in move mode--- to pan hold the space bar down and drag the screen with the mouse.

Anyway, actually you can. Here how to change Mouse Wheel behavior (at least in GIMP 3):
Step (1) Go to Preference and search for Input Devices -> Input Controllers category of options in there.
Step (2) There you should find "Main Mouse Wheel" as an Active Controller, double click on it and a menu will open that allows you to configure behavior of Mouse Wheel.

In the Zoom case the replies pointed out the ctrl-mouse wheel combo is both convenient and built in. No need to change anything.
