Scanning with Gimp on Windows 11

Can I scan from Gimp on Windows 11 using a Plustek Opticfilm 8100? I see there is a plugin called twain.exe in the plugins folder but Ceate> Camera/Scanner only offers the WIA interface. If I select it nothing happens. I am totally unfamiliar with Windows, being a lifelong Linux user.

Unfortunately, we had to drop 32bit TWAIN support after GIMP 3.2.0, so that would be the last version that supports it: https://download.gimp.org/gimp/v3.2/windows/

We use MSYS2 for Windows packages when building, and they're dropping support for 32bit versions which our TWAIN plug-in relied on. If someone finds a way around that, we're happy to include that plug-in again - but for now, all we can support is WIA.

I am also a linux user so these are just from searches and you have probably already done that.

Since you are using Gimp 2.10 you need a TWAIN installation that typically comes with the scanner. (..and memories of using Windows )

Does the scanner come with Silverfast ? Even the SE version would do.

My Windows 11 is 64bit, in case that changes anything. And as I say, the twain plug-in is present.

Unfortunately, the 32bit support refers to the build process, not whether you're running it on a 32bit or 64bit OS. The TWAIN plug-in technically builds, but the packages necessary to make it actually work are no longer supported by MSYS2.

OP did not read the links I posted

As well as the 32 bit Gimp TWAIN plugin (there in Gimp 2.10)  the scanner also needs a TWAIN installation in the OS.

As an old (ancient) example this for a Canon scanner, all the files Windows needs for a particular scanner.

   

As I understand, Plustek incorporated that in their scanner driver  but  Windows 11 no longer supports TWAIN and does not provide code for the scanner manufacturer.

The best solution is not Gimp but some other software and if SilverfastSE works use that.
