A few months ago, whenever I try and use the clone tool, the tool size seemingly randomly changes size and orientation when I move the cursor or tool. I've tried disabling dynamics options, but this had no effect. In the paint dynamics editor, the opacity, size, and angle have an x in the random column, which I cannot change. While I don't know if that is related, it may be relevant.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled gimp to no avail. As I've said, I downloaded 3.04 as an appimage with the same results.
There is a slight difference between Gimp 2.10 and Gimp 3.0.4
Gimp 2.10 has a "dynamics off" dynamic - which is "empty" nothing ticked.
Gimp 3.0.4 has a tick box toggle for dynamics on / off. looks like this.
The dynamics settings 2.10 or 3.0 are greyed out (1) for the system dynamics, they are not writable. For an editable dynamic you need to make your own, (2) which goes in your Gimp User Profile. (showing Gimp 3.0.4)
Of course it could be something not related to dynamics, an animated brush that varies in size ... will work as a clone source. This a "leaf" brush with 4 or 5 different shapes in one brush. Gimp 2.10.38 with dynamics off.
Rarely any use to reinstall Gimp, the settings are in your User Profile which remains between installations, Even worse Gimp 3 will try and migrate your Gimp 2.10 settings.
Edit: Have you tried Edit -> Preferences -> Tool Options -> Reset Saved Tool Options to Default Values
