Lunar eclipses are happen about twice a year. For a lunar eclipse to happen, the Moon must be exactly behind the Earth as seen from the sun. 14 days later, the Moon has made half an orbit, so goes is now in front of the Earth as seen for the Sun, in the position necessary for a solar eclipse to happen.
