Another workflow:
- Select the area with the "Fuzzy Select Tool" or the "Select by Color Tool"
- Make a new layer and Fill the area with the "Bucket Fill Tool" (light red here)
- Select / To Path
- Make a new layer and Stroke Path (select the Paint Tool; I used Brush 2 here. Hardness 0.25, Size 70, Hardness 25, Strength 17, red color)
- Select / None
- Make the path invisible
- Select the area with the "Fuzzy Select Tool" or the "Select by Color Tool"
- Make a new layer and Fill the area with the "Bucket Fill Tool" (light red here)
- Select / To Path
