Mint partitioned the VM and wrote the system and the standard apps. I did an apt update / apt upgrade which pulled in about 15 updated packages. The only thing I installed was synaptic so I can easily check on versions but not used to install anything. It is a clean installation.
Rich, if you are still interested in this convoluted situation, this last statement you made caught my attention. You stated you used a Mint 22.3 MATE DE.
Curious about this, I downloaded the 22.3 Mate desktop environment and gave it a try on a live USB with the 2.10.38 and 3.0.6 Custom AppImages you provided to me.
They both worked flawlessly and keyboard input was working properly.
Thinking I was perhaps losing my mind, I downloaded the 22.3 Cinnamon version of Mint again and tried the custom Appimages on a live USB and again, it failed to work properly with no keyboard input allowed. This was the same result when I still had Mint 22.3 fully installed.
If this whole topic isn't tiring you by now, I do think I may have figured something out. Not how to fix anything, of course, but that the issue seems to be tied just to the Cinnamon DE in Mint 22.3.
