That is the type of error you get when you try to open an xcf file made with, say Gimp 3 in an older Gimp such as Gimp 2.10
I cant recall all the version changes. What Gimp version did you use / what are you using now ?
In Gimp 3 there is a clue given bottom of the save dialog. Typically a layer effect.
If really stuck, then it is possible to use a binary editor and change the version number ( to 14 maybe) and lose some of the editing.
