An alternative workflow for the supplied SVG. Avoids selections. Still quite time consuming
Open the svg at 12000x... and import merged paths.
New transparent layer and Edit -> Fill paths. That took 3 minutes on my laptop.
Apply an alpha lock on that layer.
Apply the gradient. That took 5 minutes. CPU usage still 70 - 80 %
