Here's what I've got as of today.
I used the method @denzjos suggested. To make it work I had to remember a) to switch the foreground color back to white (as they said. I had it red from when I was colorizing the image and kept wondering why the paintbrush had no effect; and b) to make the mask active. Duh, right?
Ended up making a dark masked layer for the shadows.
Frankly, I still haven't worked out how and why this succeeded, but it did.
