Fading around irregular image

So, the reason you don't see the "feather" immediately after executing it and must either copy/paste/paste new/hide...or apply a layer mask, is because it's a "selection" and isn't realized until you executed a visually enabling action? Is this a fair line of thought?

Yes, the selection is "latent" so to speak so you only see it by its indirect effects. 

But you can make it visible  using "quickmask" mode:

   

You can also use Select>Selection editor to see the selection, but you don't see your image at the same time.
