Alternatives?
If you have lots of layers/images, say from an animation, then you could look at using command line imagemagick and montage. https://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/montage/
For Gimp the only one that springs to mind is the gmic plugin http://www.gmic.eu One of the filters is montage
