How do edits such as Exposure or Hue work?

Does GIMP work in this fashion? Or is it something too advanced for me to figure out?

I'm using GIMP through the Linux addition to my Chromebook as a photo editor since I obviously cannot install Photoshop or want to pay for it. I have no issue doing the basics and I know how layers and their opacities work but it's pretty much anything in the Color tab that I don't understand to do in a versatile manner similar to Photoshop.

There is no equivalent to the adjustment layers in PS so far. AFAIK this is part of the roadmap for Gimp 3.0
