But maybe you shouldn't be doing this... If you want to add an umbrella, you add it on another layer, and put it between two copies of the frog layer (the top layer needs only to be partial. No need for complicated selections in that case. I fyou post the XCF with the from an umbrella on different layers, I can show you how it is done.
Noo to be clearer, what I want is an outline around the entire image. So the outline around the periphery of the frog and its umbrella but without the inside of its parts outlined. I'm going to print it so this is just to make it easier for me to cut exactly. But I'm not going to be cutting into those little enclosed white parts so I don't want the outline there.
