Same here, using XnView MP, for something like 20 years now (strating with Windows 98 or ME I just don't really remember )

Just right click on an image and open with GIMP or just use the the shortcut keyboard auto assigned(Alt+1) on a selected image.
I'm using the .deb package from XnView MP

To set-up GIMP as "Open With" in XnView, it's extremely simple, on the screenshot below the red arrow point it out, just follow what the next window tells/ask you
