While still a floating selected layer you can move into position.
Best way is make that a new layer then move that.

Want to move a layer that contains transparency. Use the move tool. Enable 'Move active layer'
Keep an eye on the layer stack in case any of your 'maneuvers' places the new layer under the canvas and hides it.

thanks for the great reply, the vids help a lot, even with the great gimp tools and features, this is a gigantic learning curve
