Well it is complicated, and for your purposes, make a mockup with as many layers as required. You do not want to be re-creating the same thing over-and-over-again.  You can use this one as an example

(1) Group various aspects of a design in layer groups. (2) Toggle layer visibility on/off depending on final requirements (3) Keep an empty layer for your design, text layers will go above there as well. (4) Change the fabric colour as required. (5) Change the background colour or paste in a design.

It is just an example, make your own along those lines.

Any number of ways to separate a foreground and a background using Gimp. What you use very much depends on the background. Solid colours easy, patterns not so easy. Plenty of videos about this topic.

Gimp has a cartoon filter, not that good, depends what you want.. Try the gimp-gmic-qt plugin http://www.gmic.eu which as a couple of cartoon filters, the comic book filter is very good.

I have tried this however when I apply the filter the image turns all black

What am I doing incorrectly,  I have looked at YouTube videos and it seems straight forward make adjustments then apply.

I'm getting frustrated with this entire process I dont get how simple mobile apps are easier to use that a sophisticated program like this.

Thanks for your help in advance.
