Showing my age, I remember when that came out. It is very comprehensive but for a new user can be confusing. I do find it hard reading. It came before Gimp 2.8 and looked forward to features by referring to Gimp 2.7

Much like the Gimp 2.8 / 2.9 situation today.

Just be careful when looking at some of the screenshots and wondering how to get there in Gimp 2.8

For basic reference Gimp help is still good, although obscure in places.

For working offline, the PDF of Gimp Help is useful - one here http://gimp.linux.it/www/meta/ 31 MB Indexed, searchable.

Little used by most but keyboard shortcuts are a valuable aid to productivity. Do a search and usually the Gimp 2.6 list comes up. So use this one. http://clownfishcafe.blogspot.co.uk/p/gi...tcuts.html
