Exactly A4 ? Opened in Gimp they should be 4960 x 7016 pixels - Look top of the Gimp Window for image size. Some scanners will do an automatic crop-to-size.
These are big images, uncompressed size in Gimp. As a compressed jpeg it might only be a MB or two
Do not use BIMP, there is an 'other Gimp procedure' for scaling in pixels but it crashes BIMP. Tried in both BIMP 1.8 and 2.2 (a bit flakey) both the same.

It does a batch convert but unlikely that you will get everything in one go. Page sizes, Landscape or portrait, all need different set-ups.

....and as a final shot.. 600 ppi is well over the top. 300 ppi more than adequate.
Print a large image using a professional colour laser and it might use 254 ppi (100 pix-per-cm) but with interpolation gets outstanding results. example: https://www.digitalab.co.uk/about-lightjet-prints/
