Selective shading

You can sort of reduce the bumpiness like this;:
  • Filters>Enhance>Wavelet decompose
  • Starting from the bottom (Residual) replace layers in the composition by their average (Filter>Blur>Pixelize and use a block size that is at least as big as the layer).
For instance, decomposed to 7 levels, and averaging Residual, Scale 7, and Scale 6:
