Same font looks different on linux. Fix?
Posted by: xp15 - 09-11-2017, 07:38 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

This is the font on Windows and how I like it, clear and thin:

And this is how it looks on linux:

Edit: I'm not sure if it's Arial font as when I change the text to Arial in windows it has different spacing than before. So what is this font? A specific Arial? Why can't I find it's name?

How do I fix it so I looks like in Windows? Hinting and Anti aliasing haven't helped.

(old thread)

I've created this file with gimp before, and now if I open it, the font looks the same at start,
but when I try to edit it it becomes different, see pictures (first is normal, second is after making an edit to the text):

It may have happend after installing mscore fonts, but why would it happen? Isn't it the same font anyway? Is san font that comes with Ubuntu different than the one in mscore fonts?

Pls help me solving it as it causes mess in my documents, it takes more space as the font is pretty wider than before.

  How to Keep Resolution....
Posted by: sallyanne - 09-10-2017, 10:09 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

After editing an image how do I keep it at the same resolution that it was at previously?

I noticed in the small box that pops up when you 'export' that there was/is an advanced option. I clicked on it and it gave me an option to
'Use quality settings from original image' (Now that I have clicked the advanced + I don't get the advanced option any more - maybe it doesn't for an image previously exported with this setting.) It does however give 'load default and save default'

My question also would be do I need to put in a number for quality at the top - like when compressing?

Think I have worked it out. Can you please confirm.

Any file formats that support multi-layer images?
Posted by: mholder - 09-06-2017, 07:30 PM - Forum: Other graphics software - Replies (5)

I know about Openraster (.ora), but I lose channels and masks.

My problem is that I use different tools, mostly Krita and Photoshop.  Krita does a great job opening .xcf files and saving them as (reasonable) .psd files.  Gimp is absolutely awful at .psd.  My problem now is that with Gimp 2.9 the .xcf files from Gimp are not even compatible with Krita.

Better yet, is there a way to edit the .xcf files so that Krita thinks is created by version 2.8?  I tried opening an .xcf file with a test editor and it freaked out.

Better PSD Support

The PSD plug-in now supports a wider range of blending modes for layers, at both importing and exporting: Linear Burn, Linear Light, Vivid Light, Pin Light, and Hard Mix blending modes. It also finally supports exporting layer groups and reads/writes the Pass Through mode in those. Additionally, GIMP now imports and exports color tags from/to PSD files.

I spoke too soon.  I'm now using 2.9.7 and . . . OMG it is awesome, at least I think so.  I need to test it, but still would like to know if anyone here is aware of a good format.

Path tool deactivated with 'no smoking' symbol.
Posted by: Mugunga - 09-06-2017, 03:53 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

All I'm trying to do is draw a dotted line with the path tool. However, when I have the path tool open, it doesn't create paths when I click. there is a little symbol above the path tool that resembles the 'no smoking' frame (without a cigarette), which seems to mean it isn't active. I did Select -> None, and I have no floating layers. How do I make my paths work again?

Thanks.

  Cropping out an overlay
Posted by: skiparay - 09-06-2017, 02:05 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

First off, I'm going to say that I am an absolute newbie at this, so I apologize If I'm asking a question that has been asked numerous times already.  Thank you all in advance for your help

And now for the problem.

I'm trying to crop out parts of the flag below and leave only the part that the crab touches behind. In addition, I'd to like overwrite the crab's texture with that of the flag.  Basically I'm trying to recreate that Maryland flag sticker that people have on their cars.  I have everything sized the way I want it, but I don't really know where to proceed from here.  Help would be most appreciated.

  Remove unused devices--how?
Posted by: mholder - 09-05-2017, 08:16 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

I have a few tablets.  One of them I want to use, but the other ones I don't.

In the 'Configure Input Devices' window there is a massive list of devices that I don't intend to use.  It is a mess, but I don't see any way to remove unused devices.

Is there an easy way to clean up the list and keep the device I want?

Question No Pan Tool?
Posted by: arakish - 09-05-2017, 03:21 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

Did a search, but no results...

There is no pan tool in GIMP?  Similar to the "Hand Tool" in Photoshop.

Thanks,

rmfr
