  Gimp Collaboration
Posted by: Durgen - 02-02-2017, 09:06 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (1)

I would like to make a gimp project collaboratively with a friend, but I haven't found any methods that are possible.

By collaborate I mean if there were two computers connected via ethernet cable and they both had gimp. Would it then be possible to have them work on the same image so that one could see what the other had just done and vise versa.

My first idea was to make both computers use the same image simultaneously, but that didn't work because gimp seems to load the image in memory. So the next thought was to share the swap/memory/temp between the two computers, but i'm not sure how to even do that. (by swap I mean the gimpswap file or any other tile caching.) I tested one idea by opening the same image in two gimp windows but they just edited them separably.

I seem to remember a version of gimp would always use another file with the same name but with a ~ at the end in the same folder as the one being edited to save temp data of some sort. I am now wondering if you could use that simultaneously?

I have looked at compiling my own version of gimp, but probably wouldn't know where to start. Possibly making a plugin might help, but again don't know what to look for as a reference.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

  flatten image to transparent
Posted by: kumado - 02-02-2017, 03:32 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (11)

Hello all,

I am new to the forum.
I did a couple searches, been over Google a bit but ....

If I can explain this: ( I am sure I might not use the "proper" term somewhere, please excuse me )

I have a png image with a transparent background.
If I re-size the canvas, the only method I know to make the new image include the
expanded canvas is to Image -> Flatten Image.
This removes the transparent background and replaces it with the present background color from the tool bar.
The same type of thing happens to me with text. In order to have the text as part of the image,
I have to go to Image -> Flatten Image. Once again it removes the current transparent background
and replaces with the present background color from the tool bar.

    My question(s) is/are then:

Is there a way to make the image not loose the transparent background, ie
use something other than Flatten Image
    or
Is there a way to set the background selected color on the tool bar to transparent?

Thanks so much for your time,

kumado

  Lenovo Brand
Posted by: sallyanne - 02-02-2017, 05:20 AM - Forum: Watercooler - Replies (22)

I am looking at getting a new computer. Have seen a Lenovo 'all in one' computer that I like.
Lenovo IdeaCentre 300 23.8" AMD A6 1TB 8GB All-in-One

Not heard of Lenovo before.  I will be doing graphics work. (Photo restoration, Fractals etc on it). I don't play games alot. Would this be sufficient and has anybody heard of this brand before and how it  works?

At the moment I am using a Toshiba Laptop but gimp wont complete a lot of stuff because it says I don't have the memory, I cant do full resolution fractals plus my fan has stopped working. I can probably still use it for smaller things after I get that fixed but want another bigger one for other stuff

  Getting brush effects with mouse?
Posted by: OurJud - 01-30-2017, 09:53 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (7)

Fairly new to the workings of GIMP. I'm using 2.8 with Paint Studio 2.0 addon and a bog-standard mouse.

I'd like to ask if there are any setting combinations (brush types, dynamics and paintbrush modes) that will create the brush stroke and paint effect of, for instance, oils.

What I'm looking for is a stroke which will take the colour from the brush as I paint, leaving a kind of smear or scraped effect at the end of the stroke.

I know this is possible when using a mouse, as a couple of the online paint programs I've used feature just such an effect.

To be honest I'm not altogether sure how the various Dynamics work, because it doesn't seem to matter which I pick, all the strokes come out as simple, digital block strokes with no variation or texture.

Any help on getting different paint stroke effects will be very much appreciated.

Font problem when opening svg file in Gimp
Posted by: Maga - 01-30-2017, 01:45 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (10)

I have Windows 10 v 1511; Gimp 2.8.18; Inkscape v 0.91 and v 0.92 - all fonts available for all programs. I have Linux Ubuntu 16.04; Gimp 2.8.16; Inkscape 0.91 - all fonts available here too.

In Windows 10 v 1511:
When opening an svg file which contain fonts with white spaces made in Inkscape v 0.92 in Gimp 2.8.18  I encounter a problem. Gimp converts these fonts to a plain font despite the fonts being available in Gimp.

If I make an identical .svg file (same fonts) in Inkscape v 0.91 Gimp 2.8.18 opens the file correctly.

If I edit the file from Inkscape 0.92 in a text editor and remove the pings (') that is before and after the font name and save; this new file will open in Gimp 2.8.18

Using both Windows 10 v 1511 + Ubuntu 16.04
If I open the .svg file created in Windows Inkscape 0.92 in Gimp 2.8.16 running on Ubuntu 16.04 it displays correctly (not necessary to remove pings for the fonts to be correct).
I hope this makes sense Shy

Is there a setting in Gimp 2.8.18 for Windows that needs changing for the fonts with white spaces to display correctly?
TIA

Maga
