'Up arrow' on value slider bar?

I don't know if I'm missing something but there doesn't appear to be any logic or sure-fire means of getting the mouse cursor to switch to the little 'up arrow' icon which allows you to quickly change the values of brush size, opacity etc.
The other options are using the 'up and down' buttons on the slider, or to kind of drag it with the '|' icon, the latter of which is very fiddly and ineffective.
As you hover the mouse cursor over the value bar it will occasionally switch to the 'up arrow', but as I say there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to when it does this.
Am I missing something or is this normal behaviour?

Beginners set up for printing.

A look at setting up a canvas in preparation for printing. Video duration 9 minutes
A caveat:
Gimp comes from UNIX origins and printing in MS Windows is an add-on to interface with a Windows printer driver. Since printer driver software comes from the printer manufacturer, sometimes there is a less-than-perfect match.
If you have problems printing from within Gimp then export your work as an image and use some other Windows application for printing.
Whatever you do, when starting a graphic for eventual printing, it might be small, say a birthday card or it might be large, a poster, it is vital that the initial set up matches the overall aim of the project.
- Setup a new canvas at 300 pixels-per-inch for printing
- Use a preset Gimp template size.
- The Gimp Image menu -> Print Size dialogue
- The Gimp File -> Page Setup and Print dialogues
- The difference between high resolution and low resolution images.
- Printing imported images on a Gimp preset (A4 or US-Letter) canvas and the effect of printer margins.

I'd like to knock out a few prints for friends and family and am looking for some advice on the size and resolution I need to be working at to give me a a print of 'wall-hangable' size (maybe 8 inches square).
I currently work at 600px square / 300 PPI, but converting px to inches seems to be far more confusing than I imagined.
Any and all advice very welcome.

Hi
With gimp is there a tool where u can draw straight lines, and after u click the endpoint of a line it starts a new line that is connected to the first line? And so on? I've been having to be very careful when connecting lines. I'd like to draw electronics diagrams with only a few clicks

[Solved]Sharing GMP Plug-In

I have recently written a small GIMP plug-in for myself that is used to prevent color bleeding on textures when using textures with an alpha channel in games.
I am pretty sure there are other GIMP users out there in need of something like that, so I thought I'd share it. But:
I am very unfamiliar with the available forums and what not. So, where is the place to share this. Probably here?
I have found http://registry.gimp.org/ but this page is completely static.
Other Forums seem pretty dead.
Btw: The Plug-In does what is described here:

When is 'inspiration' copyright theft?

I'm looking for advice on the legalities of using material for inspiration and reference, such as street photography that could be used to recreate a digital representation which contains more than a passing resemblance to the original photograph.
I initially thought using images found on 'royalty free' websites would be tolerated, but more often than not these images have usage fees (which begs the question what does 'royalty free' even mean?) so where do we go for our inspiration and reference sources? When is a digital painting that has been 'inspired' by someone else's photograph, a blatant copy? Where's the line?
Quite often with digital artist software we see portraits of celebrities which have clearly been copied from a photograph, or simply the photograph has been used for manipulation, such as having an oil paint filter applied. Is this not copyright theft too?
Views and opinions very welcome.
[edit] A more in-depth search using terms like 'free to use images' garnered much better results, such as Pixabay, but I'd still be interested in others' views on the subject
