Does this mean there is no brush dynamics in your version of Gimp 2.9?

It has always been there, much the same as Gimp 2.8 with a couple of extra settings.

This velocity taper with various force settings, random colour, confetti. seems to work ok.

I doubt that there will be any new features. What are you looking for? Some sort of sculpting option perhaps?

No.

I can't edit brush dynamics in 2.9.9 .

For example particle brush, MULTIBRUSH TOOL and mirror symmetry like in Krita.

Tools with svg vectors like in Krita (https://krita.org/en/item/krita-4-0-beta-1/)

Parts are there. You might have to make your own brushes. This is a 'leaves' gih (animated) brush, using

An editable dynamics see: https://docs.gimp.org/2.9/en/gimp-tool-dynamics.html The stock dynamics, same as the stock brushes are not editable. Make a new one or copy of an existing to edit.

and the symmetry painting dialogue https://docs.gimp.org/2.9/en/gimp-symmetry-dialog.html

What are the differenes between Gimp and Krita ? It seems like Krita is a more refined version of Gimp, but designed mainly for painting.

What can Gimp do, that Krita can not ?

I am on dodgy ground here, because generally only use Krita to convert RGB to CMYK Wink so no expert.

A bit of background, Krita originally came from the linux KDE KOffice suite but then was split to what it is today.

As grit was asking, Krita does have vector layers, where you can have 'vector' objects that are editable to a certain extent. A little more convenient than stroking Gimp paths on their own layers.

What might be the strength of Gimp. The ability to easily use add-on scripts and plugins.

Krita does have a macro function (never used it) which might surplant some of the simpler Gimp scripts. At the moment only common to both plugin is g'mic

I don't know Krita extensive to compare the differences and I'm also begginer in Gimp.

For example, I like in Krita brush effects depending on stroke angle. If you make sudden angle, brush moves pixels which are inside the stroke. It's called sketch_ink.

I believe this could be done in gimp if canvas Warp Transform parameters would be accesible in edit dynamics toolbar.
So, as you paint, you warp pixels if sudden angle threshold is stroked.

IIRC Gimp is adding a new brush paint Engine in 2.10, but I don't remember if it's the Krita one or the MyPaint one or a mix of the two (plus bits of the original Gimp one).

It is the mypaint brush engine see: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-MyPain...Gimp-2-9-5
