Color Picker Tool in the Change Foreground Color dialog
#1
Hello all,
I've just upgraded from version 2.10 (.10 as I recall) to 2.10.32 Flatpak on Linux Mint.  Whatever the previous .xx version was, I had an eyedropper in the toolbox' Foreground Color's Change Foreground Color dialog (same also with the background color) that was supposed to let me click on the eyedropper and click on any color on the screen.

To get to the eyedropper in question, click on either the Foreground color or the Background color.  Up comes the appropriate Change Color dialog with a palette of colors to choose from, together with the HTML color code (hexadecimal 6-digit code representing RRGGBB).  The eyedropper has a pop-up explanation to "Click the eyedropper, then click any color on your screen to select that color."

I happen to have a Pencil tool selected.  I've opened the Change Foreground Color dialog, clicked on the eyedropper, then clicked on the white part of the U-Haul truck to select that color.  (I want the truck's branding to disappear from my photo of a camping activity, as it adds clutter behind the subjects of my photo.)  The Pencil drops a circle of pink where the eyedropper was to select the white shade.

Better that I exit from the Change Color dialog and use the Color Picker tool.  That works.

The same issue exists in the 2.10.32 version just installed.

Can anybody tell me how one uses the eyedropper in the Change Foreground Color dialog?  It is redundant in a way to the Color Picker tool, but it would be useful while in the Change Color dialogs if it worked!

This is a known bug since 2.10.30 (on MATE systems mainly)

Just to let you know, here MX Linux 21.1 GIMP 2.10.32 from the MX repo (thus NOT a flatpak),
Click on the Foreground color, use the pipette, this works just fine as intended (I'm using Xfce desktop environment, not MATE, if this can help to narrow the problem)

I thought I had a fix but no.

The bug is still there: Mint 21 / Gimp 2.10.32 from PPA using MATE DE

FG/BG color picker reverts to whatever tool is active. Colour picker tool works (but of course does not pick from the outside the open image)

Changing DE to cinnamon and FG/BG picker works as expected

edit: So far the only work-around I can think of is using the screen capture tool File -> Create -> Screenshot That will open a selected area as an image and you can color pick that.
something like this: https://i.imgur.com/4QTyMtL.mp4 ctrl to use paint/pencil as the picker

edit again: Tried the fix mentioned in the bug report uninstalling xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and that works (providing it does not scramble something in your installation and is applicable to a flatpak)

Thanks neto,
I am running Cinnamon desktop here.  I used to run MATE on my IBM computer, but I got a Mint Box 64-bit IoT computer with more processor and memory a couple years ago.  I see there's a few versions newer than the 2.10 family.

I am running 20.2 Cinnamon.  I had to research the "version" command or equivalent.  I used "cat /etc/issue" to find my version of Mint.
Thanks for your help, PixLab.

Looks like I need to upgrade Mint to 21 to make Cinnamon Gimp work with the eyedropper.  My workaround is to select the color picker tool and pick my color from the image.  It applies the new color to the background color, so I need to swap colors to use my selected color with the pencil.  Or swap colors to put the to-be-changed color in the background-position before using the color picker!

If the required colour is already in an image no need for FG/BG colour picker. The picker tool is all you need.
but
In the color picker tool options are Set ForeGround / Set BackGround options and whichever one is active CTRL toggles to the other. No need for swapping (as far as I can see).
...and CTRL with paint/pencil changes to a FG colour picker. All those work here;
Edit: Always dangerous to assume anything, I assumed a new Mint21 installation Wink

I do have a Mint20 Una with flatpak Gimp 2.10.30 (VM) just a matter of digging it out and running.

The fix uninstall xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-gtk does work.

I'm running GIMP 2.10.30, not flatpak, on Mint Cinnamon 21.3 and the color picker eyedropper in the change foreground color dialog box does nothing at all. The color picker tool itself works, but in the foreground color / background color change dialog boxes, nothing. Even the mouse pointer remains set to whatever tool is currently selected.

Did this happened suddenly or was it a long time "bug" on your distro?

Why not upgrade GIMP to the latest ➤ 2.10.36, this might solve your problem,
there is a PPA for *buntu based distro > https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/+...buntu/gimp to upgrade to the latest GIMP
there is also appimage you might want to try ➤ https://github.com/TasMania17/Gimp-Appim...s/releases with python2 support on latest GIMP

That's a bug in GIMP 2.10.30 / 2.10.32

It's fixed in newer versions.
