File compression

Is there a way to enable file compression automatically for the default xcf format? I scrolled through the preferences but it could have escaped my eye.

Nothing that I know of to set as a default. I usually just type in the extension when saving.

You can get Gimp to add the extension for you if you use the Select File Type drop down.
