Fonts taking forever to load
#1
Hi, I just upgraded to Gimp 2.10.12 as I was having issues with a past version of gimp. Anyway, I'm currently having issues with fonts. When trying to edit an existing photo I have, that is currently under the .xcf format. I am unable to edit the text as it's stating that gimp is "Loading Fonts (This may take a while...)". When I click on the image to try and use the text option, it gives me an error message saying "Fonts are still loading" at the bottom of the page.

This has been going on for maybe around 15-20 minutes now. Any way to know why it's taking so long to load? I don't have a ton of fonts and the last version of gimp I had never gave me this error ever.

Also quick edit, when restarting gimp and not accessing the photo, the text box still shows it's loading font. I tried steps from this site: https://superuser.com/questions/906847/g...iles-fonts but that didn't help either. I removed the font folders from gimp, but they come back when reloading gimp.

There is this thread also about slow loading fonts. https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Window...workaround. Was for Gimp 2.8 and early Gimp 2.10 but worth a try. As far as I know loading fonts is fixed in Gimp 2.10.12

If you disable the your Gimp profile C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\ (rename to ...\2.10-bak) and start Gimp. Does anything improve, after the new default profile is made.

Do you have a lot of additional fonts installed in Windows fonts?
Most probably a broken font. Does the photograph .xcf already contain a text layer? If so, do you know the font used in the photograph? There are ways of finding the name of the font even if it no longer exists.

I don't know how much of this;

still applies in 2.10.

Something to check is whether the fonts folder is actually present in the ... user > AppData > Roaming > GIMP > 210 folder.  At least one of the times I installed GIMP and kept getting the "Fonts loading" message, at some point I discovered that the fonts folder simply wasn't there.  When I created a fonts folder that was the end of the delays.  I have no idea why it wasn't there, why it apparently wasn't created during the install.  Windows will spend a certain amount of loading time looking for a missing folder and that may be part of the delay.
