Free Screen Recording

Free Screen Recording - suggestions pls

Hello Guys!

I did some research on the web looking for a free screen recorder. I ended up opting for Free Cam 8.

I liked this software, but I expected to be able to have better options for selecting the area of the screen I want to record, to be able to pause the recording, and display, if possible, the keys and mouse buttons being used in the video and add comments.

It also saves only in WMV format, so less flexible, although there are many options for converting from WMV to other formats available on the web.

I was curious about other options like OBS Studio and ShareX, but they seem to me more complicated and I would like something simpler and with a small learning curve.

Any suggestions for Windows 10?

Thx.

Kdenlive is simple and can do a lot of things. I am not sure about the mouse and key recording options. Perhaps there is a plugin that we can use.

If in Linux, check Kazam or Peek.

I hadn't heard of that software before; Kdenlive

It also didn't appear among the options that I had seen during my research, and I don't know why, but even if I had found it I would think it would be just for Linux, that name seems to me to have some connection with Linux.

I will take a good look at this Kdenlive, it seemed very interesting, but it is more for a video editor than for a versatile screen recorder.

But I still hope to find another option for a screen recorder.

meetdilip, thanks for the tip!

You could always try 'Microsoft Expressions Encoder 4 Screen Capture SP2' - it's a bit old but does the job.. needs to be downloaded from the archives - https://web.archive.org/web/201711201523...x?id=27870 ,you need Silverlight too apparently.. https://www.microsoft.com/Silverlight/
it outputs .xesc video files, which can be read by VLC and the video editor I use (Shotcut https://shotcut.org/) or if need be you can convert/transcode with ffmpeg.

Here's a quick demo (I used OBS Studio to screen record the screen recording..) - https://youtu.be/58lcBA1WnXc

Kdenlive is like GIMP, made for Linux but available for Windows. It is a video editing software which can do simple screen recording.

Zero01, definitely an interesting option and worthy of my attention.
Thanks for the tip and for the video that was very instructive!

meetdilip, I don't know anything about Linux. I tried it once in the past to use it, but it was very complicated, not very intuitive, requiring a lot of knowledge of the operating system to perform simple tasks like compiling and pasting files, and with many versions available at the time.
Possibly today it must have changed a lot.
Maybe the next time I buy another PC or if I format this mine, I will try to partition HD and try Linux for a while.
Thx!

Perhaps you misunderstood me. Kdenlive is available for Windows 10 and can record screen with a single click with high quality.

It is quite ok not to opt Linux. That is a personal choice Smile

No suitable Windows computer so I do not know. Does Kdenlive record in Windows? I thought ffmpeg would only capture video in linux.

Try out the popular linux video / audio / graphics programs using a bootable 'live' usb drive. Get Ubuntu Studio https://ubuntustudio.org/

Installation https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14912/cr...ash-drive/ Apparently Rufus works for Windows users https://rufus.ie/

Using my laptop: 2 minutes is long enough: https://youtu.be/cb1YexmRsYU

Ohh ... this is really interesting and even more scary!

I saved all these links in a bookmark folder in the browser where I will be able to consult them again.

This subject (Linux, partition, typing DOS commands, etc.) is totally unfamiliar to me.
I started a quick and superficial reading on the How-To Geek page just to get a sense of the degree of difficulty and understanding that I would have or not.

I find terms like:
"If you’re creating a live USB drive from a live disk, ensure Ubuntu’s Universe repository is enabled before you continue. You can do that by running the following command:" - "sudo add-apt-repository universe"

Reading that or Greek or Chinese is almost the same for me  Blush

I don't know what a "live disk" is, or a "repository", let alone where he expects me to type these commands.

Ok, I'm a noob and maybe that article is aimed at more experienced users or at least familiar with Linux.

Still, maybe this weekend or the next, I will try to focus on reading this article and trying to understand it.

rich2005, thank you very much!

Krikor, sorry for necroposting, but what did you use in the end?

I'm currently looking for something that would help me to make timelapse videos for digital paintings. So just like you, I need only basic functions from the program like active pause, simple edits, and such. I had a look at KDEnlive meetdilip recommended and it looks way too complicated (unfortunately, I have zero expertise in video editing).
