GFIG and symmetry
#1
I the grid makes it easy to create patterns, but the problem is that the half the squares of the grid at the bottom and on the right are outside the view, which makes the texture non-tilable. is it possible to do something about this?

I doesn't seem to be that bad with grid distance 40, what is the best setting?

Make the Grid a proper fraction of the canvas size. The default is 30. For a 500x500 canvas 50 is good. For a 400x400 canvas 40 is good.

this example 500x500

But from the subject title - symmetry you might be better without an out-dated tool like gfig and use the Gimp 2.10 symmetry tool. https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-symmetry-dialog.html

Any better tools for shapes than Gfig then?

The problem with gfig is it comes from Gimp 2.2 (actually Gimp 1 as a plugin) and has never been removed or really updated. Use it and be very careful, you can lose your work. Shapes in Gimp are usually added as a path and there are a few plugins for this. A path is good because it can be moved / strokes /fill as required.

If you want a plugin where you can visualize the shape on the canvas try this one.
There is a download here: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-arakne...6#pid16206

If you want some symmetry using the symmetry dialogue, it might go like this one minute animation. https://i.imgur.com/88VAKTl.mp4 Up-to-you to practice using Gimp.

If that puts you off using Gimp then try the vector editor Inkscape. http://www.inkscape.org

I will try the arakne plugin, it doesn't put me of using Gimp, it's just sad that a tool i like some aspects of is so abandoned and unstable.

I will check out inkscape again too, i didn't like it years ago but it seems much better now.

There are a few recent bug reports about gfig and a request https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/8907 that might one day result in a replacement tool.
