GIMP 2.10.32, Layer Mode Burn Broken?
#1
Hi,
I just installed the latest version of GIMP 2.10.32 on Windows. I was running some tests, and found this broken behavior. Could someone check this out on their system?

1. Load an image into GIMP. I've tried this with both 'png' and 'jpg' file types.
2. Duplicate the layer.
3. On the duplicate layer, apply the default Engrave settings from Filters/Distorts/Engrave....
4. Change the layer mode of the top layer to Burn.

Please explain what the bug is, and what were you expecting.

I thought it might be a difference between a Gimp 2.8 render and a Gimp 2.10 render but both the same, so not that.
You want to combine the desaturated 'engraved' layer with the original coloured layer in some way ?

Please post the original image of your first post, for us to test on that very same image as well

Thanks guys for the attention,
I went ahead uninstalled 2.10.32 and re-installed GIMP 2.10.30.
I reproduced the steps in 2.10.30, and the result is correct.

Here is the original image before the Burn.

I can get that mangled image with Win 10 (VM) / Gimp 2.10.32  https://i.imgur.com/g9BQzW3.jpg  but not in my regular linux Gimp 2.10.32 https://i.imgur.com/5mVD8Qb.jpg

The Windows Gimp shown is a 2.10.32 but there is a newer Gimp 2.10.32-1 installer. I have not got round to trying that yet. Maybe that works.

Nope, tried the Windows Gimp 2.10.32 (revision 1) and that is also broken.
Send the devs a bug report: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues

Trying to find out what is going on in Windows Gimp 2.10.32 and failed miserably. The effect also applies to the Newsprint filter and no escape using Ofnuts engrave python plugin Wink

A quick fix while editing is into the GEGL Hue-Chroma and bump Lightness up a tiny amount. Bound to be other temporary fixes as-well.  The next layer mode down Linear-Burn also works without the effect and perceive-ably no different to Burn mode.

Maybe you need to try the legacy burn mode or linear burn in the default mode.

Nope, tried all those, AFAIK specific to Windows Gimp 2.10.30/32 from gimp.org
