Always better to disable your old Gimp User profile - rename or move to another folder for a new Gimp 3 install.
So you are saying that it is best not to have both 2.10.38 and 3.04 installed? My thoughts were to have both installed, so in the case of annoying bugs in 3.04, I could revert back to 2.10.38. Note that in 2.10.38 where Edit > Preferences > Interface > Windows Management > Save window positions on exit = check, this did not result in the GIMP window extending below the taskbar. But then there was only one GIMP install.
