Portable Gimp 2.9.9 for linux
#21
There is a ppa-purge utility that removes a PPA cleanly. I added a PPA for KDE updates that updated and broke many things, and with ppa-purge I was able to recover a working system.

Hopefully sometime in this decade  the Software manager will be updated and I can try out layer group masks.

I installed Kubuntu 18.04 in a VM so I could try out the Gimp 2.10 from the ppa
https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasc...gimp-edge/

It uses muon package manager by default. Installed synaptic just to feel comfortable. Is it any better than synaptic? The blub says https://www.linux-apps.com/content/show....ent=137507

I agree with you there Smile

The requirements for compiling Gimp 2.9.9/10 from start of the year brought in some really recent package changes.

I had a try in Kubuntu 16.04 and quickly ran into problems. Apart from dependency issues, the way some of the packages now require compiling has changed. Some are still ok with .compile/make others use autogen or cmake or pip. It is a real mess.

I hope that someone will get a Gimp 2.10 up and running for 'buntu 16 / mint 18 versions but not holding out much hope. It is looking like a complete version update long before LTS end-of-life 2021. Might go back to a rolling distro like PClinuxOS.

Here is an Appimage for 2.10.rc1 in the first post.

Technically it works, but just like the Pixls Appimage plugins like Felimage, Resynthesize, Plasma2, and probably more plugins/scripts don't work.

It is unfortunate.  Gimp isn't that useful for me without these things.  I hope this is because it is an Appimage, compiled missing some things.

My main fear though is that when 2.10 is released there won't be any way to easily get it in a Linux system.

It is the pixlus appimage, just that the link goes to the latest version.

When it eventually supersedes Gimp 2.8.x you will be able to get it. The only thing is 'easily' Most probably you will need a linux version update.

I use Gimp 2.8.22 from a ppa. The default version in 'buntu 16.04 is still Gimp 2.8.16, not exactly up-to-date there.

Normally you can add the scripts and plugins to your profile (if they don't requires recent libs like the core Gimp does). OTOH there is currently a problem with the AppImage that prevent it from loading external Python scripts.

Final word - absolutely no guarantees Wink Any feedback will be welcome. It might only work on my computer, in which case I will scrap the thread.

Hi, I'm Sonia.
I'm glad to be using GIMP portable 299 with satisfaction; for which I thank you.
I wanted to know if you also plan to make the version for the 2.10. Shy
Thank you

No, not from me (but there are alternatives)

1) I am still using (k)ubuntu 16.04 and the ready-made source from the 'buntu ppa is not there. AFAIK the maintainer said not possible.

2) There is a Gimp 2.10.x flatpak from gimp.org that works, although several plugins are an issue, since the flatpak is 'sandboxed'

3) There are a series of appimages from https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-appimage/releases/
However, the maintainer is now using a Centos base, the appimages do work but do not expect any additional compiled plugins to work. Scripts and Python should be ok.

Thank you, Rich. I was wondering because I use xenialpip64 in frugal installation and so it is useful to keep some sw on a pen to avoid taking space on xenialpup.  So I'll settle for the 299 gimp that you did beautifully.

thanks again Sonia
