Gimp Background colour.

I am suprised at the apparent number of people that select the black working screen for Gimp, going by the youtube videos out there.
Personally if I am goint to draft a drawing by hand, My first thing is to grab a WHITE sheet of paper to sketch it out on using a dark pencil etc..
Which I also tend to use with Gimp.
I wonder if they represent the majority ??

Same as you - I use a white (cream) background. I notice most of the internet has a white background. (big generalization  I think the dark backgrounds are a coding fad that was pushed as more acceptable by people who mostly code. The dark background on Davinci Resolve  actually makes it hard to see any of the smaller text boxes.

It does seem to be a matter of fashion and a vocal bunch of PS fans who want Gimp to mimic PS.

For a professional (or keen amateur) your work has to match the printed result.  Generally that means a colour calibrated monitor and for user perception of colour, working in a neutral environment.  That is not black, it is a mid-grey with (mostly) a reduced monitor brightness.

My take on Adobe (pre-subscription model) was they keep changing it so that users will spend cash on a new, different looking version.  This is an older PS - definitely not black.

   

Although Gimp default is the black theme, at least it comes with alternative lighter themes.  The area around the image is the "Padding" and that is changed in Edit -> Preferences as well. Any colour you want, including white.

   

I use a light theme, the dark theme gives me eye-strain.  

I read somewhere (mainly about phone users) the idea was pushed that a black theme saved battery power. However that was negated by the user bumping up the display brightness to make it readable.  I do not know if that is true. (deleted rude comment about phone users.   )

Quite the opposite here.
Since my eye problems began I found it more pleasant and less tiring to have a dark surrounding.
So my Mint theme is in dark and so are the apps like GIMP, Inkscape, Libreoffice ....
