Gimp + Gmic + AppImages
#1
I am having some difficulty with Gmic filters not functioning while using the latest Gimp AppImage.

GIMP_AppImage-git-2.10.21-20200910-withplugins-x86_64.AppImage

If anyone else is using this version here could you tell me if a whole lot of your Gmic plugins that came with it are not working?  As an example, let's just pick the Artistic filters, maybe 5 out of all of them are functional for me.

I don't know if it's a Gmic issue, a Gimp problem, or an AppImage packaging problem and was hoping someone here may have some insight into it.

The lastest Gimp AppImage comes with the latest Gmic 2.9.2.

Anyway, I've still got Gimp AppImage version 2.10.19 that comes bundled with Gmic 2.9.0 and all Gmic filters work flawlessly with that setup, so it isn't any emergency or anything.  I'm just curious if anyone else has had this same problem.

I can see the problem. https://i.imgur.com/G3YBUut.jpg

The gmic_gimp_qt plugin embedded in the appimage is 2.9.2 but dated a couple of months ago and David Tschumperlé has changed the code since then.

Are you still using Mint 19 ? Try this version I compiled a week ago https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=...KrvLdF7p0k

Unzip and put the gmic_gimp_qt-292 file (check that it is still executable) in the Gimp profile ~/.config/GIMP-Appimage/plug-ins That will override the old plugin.
If you have updated your Mint to Mint 20 then get the appropriate plugin from http://www.gmic.eu and put in the Gimp profile as above.

ps. no need for the big text, not blind.

Thanks, Rich.  I don't know what in the **** happened with that text but I tried to edit it about 3 times and took it all the way down to 1 and it was still huge.  ???

Yes, I'm using Mint 20.  I'll try your suggestion and get back to the thread to let you know if worked or not.

I assume you wrote the text in an external editor ant then copy/pasted it to your browser. When doing so the editor widget tries to keep the formatting from the source and everything goes downhill from there. Two solutions:

  1. Paste with Ctrl-Shift-V: this only copies the bare text and discards all the fancy stuff
  2. Select you whole post, and the click the Remove formatting icon in the editor widget toolbar (A with red "forbidden" sign on it).

Your suggestion didn't work.  I d/l'ed the Ubuntu Focal 20.04 : Plugin for Gimp 2.10 and put it in .config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10/plug-ins and it didn't register in  GIMP_AppImage-git-2.10.21 at all.

I renamed the plugin to gmic_gimp_qt-292 and it did register but still with numerous errors on many of the filters.

Maybe I didn't download the correct file?  I got it from here:

Ubuntu 20.04 Focal: Plug-in for GIMP 2.10

Thanks for the tip on formatting.

This one ? https://gmic.eu/files/linux/gmic_2.9.2_g..._amd64.zip dated 2020-09-03

The name of the plugin does not matter. Make sure it is executable.

I have a kubuntu 20.04 desktop, I will fire that up and see what works / does not work. Keep visiting.

Rich, it doesn't work.  I downloaded the file you provided, marked it as executable, and the Gmic entry under Filters doesn't appear.

If it is renamed to gmic_gimp_qt-292 it does appear but still with errors on a large number of the filters.  I even deleted the whole Gimp-AppImage directory and let Gimp rebuild it and tried again completely fresh, thinking maybe some little something was preventing it from properly working.

In the 'office' now.

I can see the gmic_gimp focal plugin does not show in kubuntu 20.04 the name does not matter.

Try the one from my storage:  https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=...KrvLdF7p0k unzip etc as before

By rights it should not work, it uses the QT libraries from Mint19 Worth a try.

Try deleting the pluginrc file and let gimp scan the plugins again. Might be an old setting causing problems. edit: I see you already did this Wink
edit: refresh the filters as well. Can't think of anything else at the moment. The problem should reallly be sorted out by the appimage maintainer across at pixlus

Thanks for the time and interest, Rich, installing the older one worked.  It's working great now.  Knowing that it isn't something out of order on my side is reassuring and I'll now calmly wait for the AppImage guys to straighten it out on their end and not sweat it. Big Grin
