RE: That is a normal image tab. You get one for each open image. There is no way to remove them
Actually that is a feature, in that you immediately see all the image files that are in GIMP's memory so that you can save the ones you've edited or close them as desired when quitting GIMP.
As a 'solution' you might try one or both of the following:
Switch to a higher resolution on your monitor unless it it/or your GPU are topped out.
Bite the bullet and upgrade. I upgraded to a 27" BenQ running at 2560 x 1440 dpi also supports full sRGB. Absolutely no regrets—buck$ well spent.
The image tab is only 9/32" tall. Perfect!
