1. Create text using font and colour of your choice.

2. Right click text layer and select "Text to Path"

3. In the paths dialogue make the path visible.

4. Create a new transparent layer above the text.

5. Edit > Stroke Path (use Stroke Line) ; foreground colour will be used

6. Turn off path visiblilty

(7. Optional - move outline layer above or below the text layer - your choice)

xcf file is attached

For a plain outline there is also ofn-outline-layer. If you want an inner outline it the best way to do it correctly (correct handling of the edge pixels) .

If I undo after a few times after the scrip is done, I see 5 layers. If I switch the first two layers then I see a plastic font. (bug in the script ?)
If I select glas then is the result poor, there is only a little dark bump to see.

The script give no error

I think I know what the problem is.
There have been changes from 2.10.12 to 2.10.14 that affect bump maps (and bevels). So I have stayed on 2.10.12

If you are running 2.10.14 there is a fix here:

You need the bumpmap64.exe file installed in the correct place.
Hope that fixes it.

Blighty, I've put the files on the right place and the script is working as it should be. Thanks for the support.
