Taking background out of photo
#1
Photo
Im having real problems hear cutting the background out. Round his suite I cant split it from the background and round his head the background is showing in the hair (please see photo attached)

Cant seam to find any paid for art work forums out there, so I guess can someone recommend what tool would do this?
Thanks

I've copied the image and used used the Fuzzy select tool on the second layer with all the options of the fuzzy select tool unselect. Then I copied the original image a few time and choose the screen layer mode to brighten up the image (other tools are possible to do this). I've done this to select the things that the fuzzy select tool has not selected. I always use the Ellipse Select tool to do this. If everything was selected I made a transparant layer under the original image and add an alpha channel. Then I've deleted the selected area. Then I selected the face, shrank the election by 1 and feathered with value 2.

First crop out that white outside or it will interfere with the process later on

Look at the channel, the blue is quite good for separation (my first thought, though, was the red for the hair), anyway, throw the blue channel on the canvas.
then Colors > Levels, adjust as necessary for separation in the next process (Threshold)

Then go to Colors > Threshold same here play with sliders

Then select the white part inside the guy, with the fuzzy select tool, then go to Select > Remove holes, then fill with white, then select > None
reduce opacity to know where to dab with white the few remaining black on the collar and arms edges (3 to 5 dabs only)
Once it's done DO NOT FORGET to put back the opacity to 100%!

Then Filters > Blur > Gaussian blur 1.3 to 1.8 is enough to smooth the edges out
Then go to the Channel tab/dialog, duplicate any R,G or blue channel by dragging it down below on the empty place (don't forget to select it back(the blue channel) once you've dragged it Wink )

then go back to the layer stack/dialog, select the original photo at the bottom add a layer mask and chose Channel > Blue channel copy

Then select the Mask itself (should be already selected) then go to Filters > Blur > Median Blur play mostly with the percentile slider if the mask need to be extended on each either side

Maybe a Filters > Distorts > Value Propagate (more white or more black) to fine tune in the end on the mask)

The thing is you wanted someone to remove the background of this image for you, you did not find that person for whatever reason, thus you heard about GIMP because it's free as in free beer, and told yourself "I'll do it".
But the problem is it's your first time opening an image manipulation program, and the use of GIMP will be only for this image, after you will never open it any more.
But more important, is that removing a background, is not a level of a first time new comer, it can be still a "beginner" level, but I would say a "beginner" who knows some tools and have already few weeks of practice.
> Thus you are not in a state of mind to learn GIMP, although I can understand being overwhelmed with our answers (@denzjos gave you a very simple way to do it, though).
On Youtube there are plenty videos for first time beginners, or how to remove a background (even if some methods are arguable) but in the end those videos will be too long for you.

Now you want to find someone to do it for you... try fiverr > https://www.fiverr.com/search/gigs?query...everywhere you will find someone doing it for you in even less time than you think

It does work, and it does it well
It's a "multi"-quote system, click to quote (on many comments as you want) and then click the button "New Reply", or even better just click the button "Reply" of a comment, it will auto-quote the comment.

You will never use Gimp if you do not try or rely on web applications. I know it is not easy when starting but practise and you will get there.

this one:

1. https://i.imgur.com/lt0hsJV.jpg Adjusted the image with the curve tool to differentiate FG and BG https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tool-curves.html

2. https://i.imgur.com/uo7sfRW.jpg  Get a selection using the Foreground select tool https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-foreg...elect.html Drop the original on top and use the selection for a layer mask.

3. Go around the edges of the mask and tidy up. https://i.imgur.com/YF4K6Xt.jpg Put a temporary 'neutral' layer under to make it easier to see.

Ok, might take you 15 minutes instead of dialling-up some web page but at least you are in control.
