Hmm. Works OK for me, and clicking the image gives me the choice to open in Gimp.

The images are only visible when I'm logged-in

Testing attachments with some big thumbnail size (600w,800h)

300x300 kept as is
(cannot be clicked)

   

300x700 kept as is
(cannot be clicked)
   

400x400 kept as is
(cannot be clicked)
   

500x900 scaled to 444x800
(clicking opens full size)
   

700x300 scaled to 257*600
(clicking opens full size)

Testing a 2MB biggie (the file isn't even a real XCF, it's just 2MB of random bytes).
