Easy to do, a bit more difficult to explain.

I have made a pattern image (attached below) which you can use.

1.
Open a suitable wood image.

2.
Open the pattern image (attached below) as a separate image.
Still on this image, do (Edit > Copy) or Ctrl-C
The image appears as the first pattern in the patterns dialogue. It is called Clipboard.
See (1) in the Imgur image.

3.
Change to the wood image.
Create a new transparent layer above the wood layer
(I have called them Wood Layer and Pattern Layer)
See (2) in the Imgur image

4.
Select the Pattern Layer
Bucket fill this layer with the pattern.
See (3) in the Imgur image

NOTE: There is a different method (bump mapping) which gives better results. But it is a little more advanced.

Normally the wood pattern doesn't continue across tile edges... So it would be better to cut/paste rectangles out of the initial wood image.

I have made one repeating pattern and split it into four masks. One panel is 252x58px.

Download the archive i attached, unzip it and put the four patterns into your Gimp patternsfolder.

Get a wood texture from the internet and open in Gimp. Add a layermask.
Duplicate three times.
Make these three copies variations by either flipping them or changing Brightness/Contrast.
Put a black layer at the bottom of the layerstack for the joints.

When ready put one of the four patterns into each layermask.
Bam, super quick floorpattern.
