no printing with Canon MG5220 under Debian stable
#1
Posted this on the dead forum (why is it still there if it's dead?):

I mentioned this a year ago, but the problem is still there so I thought I'd shake the bushes a bit:  My Canon MG5220 printer doesn't work with GIMP.  It works flawlessly with every other application I have on my Debian stable distro.  As I've read elsewhere on the web, you do your modifications to an image in GIMP, then you save it and use another app to print it.  Really?

The printer does nothing at all except that the little activity screen says that information is being received but nothing physical happens. It's exactly the same with Gutenprint or the 'normal' print.  Can't this be fixed guys? Every other app prints to the Canon without any trouble.  As it is, for simple work I'm now using fotoxx which prints fine, but I'd rather be using GIMP.

Because it is making advertising revenue for someone, somewhere, and there is no-one to bury it. (or answer questions).

This is a Gimp users forum, no developers here. You need to ask the question, probably in this order
Debian developers
CUPS developers
Gutenprint developers
Gimp developers

You are lucky, The Canon web site gives a printer driver for Canon pixma MG5220 from 2011. One and one-only. Canon printer support for linux is generally rubbish.

Not really, Windows printing support for Gimp is poor, it is just a link between Gimp and whatever the printer manufacturer comes up with. That advice generally applies to MS Windows..but.. if that is what you have to do...

I use (K)ubuntu 16.04 and swore off Canon printers 10 years ago, however when that happens first thing I check is the printer queue in case something is stuck. What does your browser say?

Code:
http://localhost:631/printers/

example: https://i.imgur.com/CfKm7E0.jpg No jobs for me, I clear them out.

Gutenprint: Debian stable (Stretch) still using Gimp 2.8.18 - ?

In my Gutenprint there is a driver for Canon pixma MG5220 although you might have to fiddle with the command line. I know you are using Debian but plenty of advice for 'buntu that should be applicable.

example Gutenprint from Gimp: https://i.imgur.com/8yAlSk3.jpg

If you set it up that way. it should work, however seem to remember from the past having multiple CUPS drivers and some work better then others.

Yep, fotoxx, XnViewMP ... bound to be others can be used to print.

Ah ... so no longer under the control of the legitimate gimp team then.  Thanks.

Ok, except that only gimp has problems.

Code:
http://localhost:631/printers/

... so the driver seems to think everything is fine.

Legitimate yes, official no. To summarise, gimpforums.com owner let the forum die, months later came back with an old backup copy, No permissions for moderators to control spam. So Ofnuts set up this new forum where he is the owner.

Just had a look at it, very sad, full of spam not a place I would consider posting to anyway.

I suspect not for the majority of users. There are some with problems. If you take 'buntu and Mint as debian based, then you might get some info. This one for example https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=179888

If you want to post a bug report that Gimp is not working with your printer, the place is
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/
Do not be surprised if you get referred back to debian or Canon.

Yes, I can get the equivalent, but are you sure Gimp is printing there. I am keeping things simple these days but I have in the past used different CUPS printers with the same physical printer eg. one for office printing and one for graphics printing. Do you have a PDF printer set up? Can Gimp print (not export but print) to PDF? Might prove something?

If you post a bug be sure to include all details, Gimp version, USB/Network/wireless printing

I use a flatpak Gimp 2.10.8, that is not going print using gutenprint plugin. So I either use Gimp 2.8 or my old Gimp 2.9 appimage for that.

Sorry I cannot be more help.
