The air brush and clone tool changed from smooth to a hard circle. Did I change this by accident?

Hi, over the last 6 months GIMP has been doing strange things.
Today I went to the 'open as layer' option in the 'file' tab and I couldn't see any of the image files I wanted to use.
They were there when I closed GIMP and checked in my documents.

I've also had big problems with the 'select by color' option in the 'select' tab. Sometimes when it does select, if it does at all, it won't deselect afterward. 

I have a Mac monteray 12.6.2

The lastest version of GIMP is installed, too.

A newbie here with hopefully a quick easy question. I don't know what I am doing, but I try.

I have two files, animated.gif and image.png and I want to make a gif that combines the two. The image.png is larger than the gif and I want the gif in the middle. I tried copy paste and I only got one panel of the animated gif. I tried other things and then the image flashed with the gif.

Is it possible to put a gif in the middle of a static image? If so how?

The two answers to my former questions helped me out. Thank you. My next problem is when I select a part of my image I can't work in that selection. I want to change size and color, mirror it or move it like once whas so easy in my unfortunately lost Photoshop.

Like a little popup explaining that it will not export back as a multi-page pdf, but to a flattened one-page pdf.

Since I use Gimp 2.10.32 (with MacOS), I am discovering some disagreements.

The last one is when I use antialiasing on text. The letters earn a blue shape and loose the frank white.
Someone knows why ?

Someone who knows the logic / systematics for when GIMP color the entire images (i.e. all layers) and when it is only the active layer? (with tools like "pencil"
For me it's a matter of luck. So once in a while I'm lucky: That is-  if I only want to color within an active layer, then it is also what happens
But.... I'd like to be able to be in control of the situation myself ;

Hi, I'm a gimp novice & would appreciate some help.  I have 2 photos: a nice portrait with a poor background & a photo with a lovely lighthouse & bay at dusk.  Using intelliigent sissors I've clipped the person's portrait in first photo & have it as a layer w/checkerboard background.   I have the background photo as a layer & then position the portrait into the photo w/lighthouse background.    The background photo has the flashing dotted lines of the portrait silhouette but image isn't completely visible only the very bottom of the portrait which I moved to get the lighthouse into view, even when I "chain" them together.  The portrait & the background are  where I want them but cant seem to get the entire portrait to become visible.   Could someone please suggest a solution as this is my first time gimping or perhaps order of ops from the beginning. Please be overly explicit in explaining.  Thank you!!

I am using GIMP 2.10.32 and Windows 11 22h2 and have 2+ scanning questions

Does GIMP recognise 64 bit scanner drivers?
+   If it does not will this be added in 2.99 / 3.00?

How can I use scanners with the portable version of GIMP (Create>Scanner/Camera)?
+  Create>Scanner\Camera does not bring up the scanner selection box. Can I resolve this by running Regsvr32 against the relevant gimp-scanner dll, and if so which file do I want?
