Simulate old bw photo printing effect
Posted by: Carla - 08-04-2020, 06:33 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to achieve this old printer effect described here for photoshop with gimp as I do not own ps and just cannot realize it:

https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/...rt-effects

Can anybody check whether this can be done with gimp - or is gimp lacking some required features to achieve this? Is it feasable after all? I use gimp 2.10.8 and all I get is my grayscaled picture (background) with overlaying parralel horizontal b/w-lines (layer 1). Like a zebra over a photo. But I cannot realize this certain effect that the lines get thinner or thicker as the gray gets less or more intense and that the two layers seem to blend.
Does anybody have an idea on this?

Thanks very much for your time and effort and sorry for my utter noobiness.

Cheers,
Carla

  Keyboard Shortcuts: Layer Opacity
Posted by: Wilson Newman - 08-04-2020, 01:24 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hello,

In using dialog "Configure Keyboard Shortcuts" it seems that the "Layers" shortcuts are possibly not working correctly.  Or they could be working for other people, but are not for me.

It seems that no matter which shortcut I try to set and use...

layers-opacity-opaque
layers-opacity-transparent
layers-opacity-increase
layers-opacity-decrease

... the end result is always the same.  The opacity is set to maximum 100%.

If others can replicate this issue then I guess this is a bug report.

Thank You!

I downloaded GIMP 2.10 today.  I have added the plug-ins and exe files to my plug in folder.  I now have access to the heal selection within GIMP; I am still receiving the below error message.

and I also recieve the below message.

  Editting on non-visible layers
Posted by: Gimpah - 08-02-2020, 06:40 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (5)

Hello friends,

Sometime I mistakingly think I am editing a top layer that is visible but in fact another layer that is selected (but is not visible) is being edited without me realizing.

in the preferences I have not checked:

"Allow editting on non-visible layers".

Yet this happens.

could someone explain what I am doing wrong?

Thx

  Understanding brush
Posted by: meetdilip - 08-02-2020, 02:53 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I think I am making some mistake in understanding brushes. Currently, I am only able to stamp them. If I tried to make a contour using a brush shape, it simply repeats as a merged array as seen in the screenshot

I am using the following brushes. I will be nice to know how to paint using it rather than use it as pre-made stamps. Thanks

Move Selection by given number of pixels
Posted by: Roy Tuesday - 08-01-2020, 08:13 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (5)

I'm using Gimp to do spritesheets, and I'd love a way to move a selection by a given number of pixels along an axis; E.G. 256px to the right on the x-axis. I can't do this visually, because the layers have transparency, the selections I'm working with don't line up the same way with the guides. The resolution is too high to just spam the arrow keys. I haven't found anything obvious in the documentation or the various tool options in Gimp.

My current workaround is to fill a rectangular selection around the sprite with cyan and line it up visually, but that's really clunky. Surely there's a better way?

  Creating new designs on gimp
Posted by: Vampiresrock75 - 07-31-2020, 03:44 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (3)

I'm completely new to this Gimp and sublimation prinitng.  I've bought all the gear and ready to go.  However, I'm finding it difficult using you tube for help.  I've managed to make a template for my 11oz mugs,  I now want to add different images/ pictures and text. How do you do this and then flip each one accordingly. Can you just keep dropping images on , move them where you want, or do you have to do something else?  Can I use clip arts etc  see example of what I'm trying to experiment with.

Less data = heavier file ?
Posted by: ChameleonScales - 07-31-2020, 08:26 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (5)

I just noticed that putting layers in a group layer makes a noticeably heavier xcf (in my test an xcf went from 1.2 to 1.5 GB).

But it gets more interesting : if your layers have masks and you think you can save some space by deleting them and putting a single mask for the group, it will still be heavier than when you had individual masks (even if the masks were different). In other words you'll have less data to work with but the file will be heavier.
I don't understand why. Does anyone know?

  Curved gradient and outlines
Posted by: Brushcow - 07-30-2020, 11:00 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (11)

Hello,

I'm fairly new at using Gimp (and art programs in general), and while working on a project, I've had difficulty replicating two particular visuals effects found, for example, in the picture below.

The first problem is that I can't seem too replicate the sort of customized curved gradient shown in the image. The gradient tool in Gimp has some options, but I wasn't able to make a curved gradient out of these (I don't really understand what most of the options do outside of linear), so I was wondering if there were other ways to go about replicating such an effect, or if I'm missing something. Additionally, sometimes the gradient (if I draw small lines using the tool) produces very stark differences, without nice transitions, and doesn't seem blurry enough.

The second problem is that I was wondering if there was a more efficient/clean way of doing the clearer outline between the darkest part of the shading and the thicker, darker outline, using Gimp than simply manually drawing it using the brush tool.

Thank you.
