That is probably the best way, no a lot of time/workflow saved using the Gimp plugin.

The instructions are on the PPA pages, after adding the PPA to to the repo list
In a terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp-3
sudo apt update
but then up to the user to install:
sudo apt install gimp
