Rather than doing detailed for results that you don't like, I think it would be better to provide a sample of different methods. Pick one, then details of how to do it can be provided.
I'll kick of with 2. Both quickly done rather than neat. One using bump map; the other using edge detect and bevel. Let's see what others come up with.
