You are correct, it is the crumby Windows Uninstaller that does not remove registry entries.

The process is the same as installing different versions of Gimp see: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-IS-the...52#pid9852

You need to look in the Windows registry for

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\GIMP-2in1

and delete it. Then use the Windows Gimp installer and choose your new location.

...2 minute video of that https://youtu.be/WkH7MDCW0qc   no audio.

This Did not work for me.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\GIMP-2in1
There was no "GIMP-2in1" in the Uninstall folder.
I have the same problem as OP

When I search for GIMP in the registry, as the OP suggested, the only files to appear are in

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.alpha\OpenWithProgids

and contain

(Default)
GIMP2.alpha

Should I delete these?
