Alpha to selection issue

Ok, thank you, will try the options you have suggested. Its strange because I used to have a working version. I then changed my screen from a 1080p to 4k. Had to change some settings to make the icons visible but now I get strangeness. Have tried installing 2.8.22 then 2.9 and an earlier version but keep getting the same strange happenings. Thought it might be a setting within the program that's being transferred over each time but I'm stumped if it is...
Will post on here if I find a solution :-)
